It’s a really pivotal point in the project – a project that upholds the standards and vision of our founder, Sir Henry Royce, and his famous injunction to strive for perfection in everything we do. The Directors and I have also been inspired by his practice of personally inspecting and signing off each new component, giving them his own ‘seal of approval’. Having previously signed off the final element of the structural steelwork, we wanted to do the same for the last of the wooden louvres that now clad its exterior. It’s enormously exciting to see the work progressing with such pace and precision. To have that sense of personal connection with such a significant project through these signing ceremonies is very special for all of us.”
Chris Brownridge, Chief Executive, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has completed a significant phase in the construction of its extension at Goodwood, with the new building now formally declared fully weathertight.

To mark the occasion, Chief Executive Chris Brownridge and the Board of Directors hand-signed the final one of 1,745 wooden louvres fitted to the side of the 40,000 m2 building. The Directors had previously signed the final steel beam to be installed in the building’s internal structure, before it was lifted into place at the structure’s highest point in a similar ceremony last year.

The louvres, each measuring 100 cm x 58 cm, are made from red cedar – the same material used to clad the original building it now adjoins. Red cedar has been selected for its longevity and the way it gently weathers over time to a soft silver-grey colour, blending sympathetically into the surroundings. The building’s front elevation is also clad in red cedar panelling.

With the new building now fully weather-tight, work can commence on the fit-out by Rolls-Royce’s specialist Technologies. One of the most significant projects is the new Surface Finish Centre, or paint shop; other departments will be busy with installing new equipment and creating dedicated areas for Bespoke and Coachbuild commissions.

At £300m+, the extension represents the largest single investment in the Home of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars since it opened in 2003. It will further strengthen Rolls‑Royce Motor Cars’ contribution to the UK economy, which currently stands at over £500m annually.

Press Contact: Andrew Ball
Tel: +44-1243-384-064
E-mail: andrew.ball@rolls-roycemotorcars.com

Corporate,Press Release,Leadership

This rapid progress reflects the extension’s fundamental importance to our business, providing the additional space and upgraded equipment we need to continue expanding our Bespoke and Coachbuild operations, in line with global client demand.”
Chris Brownridge, Chief Executive, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

Rolls-Royce has marked a major milestone in the development of its new extension at the Home of Rolls-Royce, Goodwood. In a formal ceremony, members of the company’s Board of Directors signed the final steel beam to be installed in the building’s internal structure, before it was lifted into place at the structure’s highest point.

The signing ceremony comes just four months after Chief Executive, Chris Brownridge, signed the first of 437 steel columns, each standing up to 13 metres high, marking the beginning of the building’s structure. The new 40,000m² building will support the marque’s expanding Bespoke and Coachbuild capabilities and house a new Exterior Surface Centre.

With the full steel framework now in place, attention now turns to the next phase of the project, which includes cladding the structure and integrating it with the existing facility via a 30 metre, 20-tonne steel bridge, delivered and installed as a single assembly earlier this year.

The ceremonial signing evokes an earlier Rolls-Royce tradition, in which supervisors would initial completed body panels or mechanical components with a chinagraph pencil before passing them to the next stage in assembly. This practice itself echoed Sir Henry Royce’s own insistence on personally inspecting and approving every new component – often requiring near-daily, 400-mile round trips between the company’s original factory in Derby and Sir Henry’s home, ‘Elmstead’, in West Wittering. Just a few miles from the marque’s present-day home at Goodwood, Elmstead served as both a retreat and a workspace for Royce, who would test, refine and sign off designs there – a legacy that continues on the very same Sussex roads still used today by the marque’s test and development team.

Costing over £300 million, the landmark new extension represents the largest single investment in the Home of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars since it launched in 2003. Once completed, it will further strengthen the company’s economic contribution to the United Kingdom, which currently exceeds £500 million annually.

Press Contact: Andrew Ball
Tel: +44-1243-384-064
E-mail: andrew.ball@rolls-roycemotorcars.com

Corporate,Leadership,Home of Rolls-Royce

We wanted to formally mark the start of construction on the main building, which is so central to our future, and to the enormous economic contribution Rolls-Royce Motor Cars makes to the local, regional and national economies. The work will continue at pace, with a target to complete the structure within the next nine months; we can then move on to fitting-out and installing the new equipment and facilities we need to support our rapidly growing Bespoke activities, complex Coachbuild commissions and growing portfolio of battery-electric motor cars.”
Chris Brownridge, Chief Executive, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

Chris Brownridge, Chief Executive of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, marked the official start of above-ground construction of the new main building by signing the first steel column erected on the company’s extension site at Goodwood.

The signed steel column is the first of 437 that, together with beams and other supporting members, will form the internal framework of the new 40,000 square-metre (430,500 sq ft) facility. The columns vary in size according to their location and function, but typically stand 12-13m (c. 40 feet) high. They will be lifted in by crane, guided into position by staff on the ground and securely bolted to the concrete foundation pads which were cast on the site earlier this year.

Adopting the same pattern used for the foundation pads, Rolls-Royce’s technical construction & engineering partner is placing the first columns on the site’s northern elevation, then gradually working their way southwards.

The finished framework will be clad with sustainable materials, carefully selected for their longevity, low environmental impact, aesthetic value and ability to blend in with the surrounding landscape. Like the existing manufacturing plant, the new building will have a living roof, providing an important new habitat for birds and insects; it will also generate its own renewable energy, using air-source heat pumps for low-level heating and a bio-solar roof to produce electricity.

Once complete, the building will house a new Exterior Surface Finish Centre (paint shop) together with a range of new equipment and dedicated areas for Bespoke and Coachbuild commissions, as well as production of the marque’s new generation of battery-electric motor cars.

The Chief Executive’s personal signature of approval on the work recalls the practice on the marque’s assembly line, whereby individual elements such as doors and chassis components were signed off with a chinagraph pencil by a supervisor before progressing to the next stage of assembly. I know he will find great inspiration in realising our clients’ dreams and aspirations, while working closely with the immensely creative and talented Rolls-Royce design team. I wish both Anders and Domagoj well in their new roles.”
Chris Brownridge, Chief Executive, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has today announced a change to its senior leadership team with Domagoj Dukec taking over from Anders Warming as the marque’s Director of Design from 1 October 2024.

During Anders Warming’s tenure as Director of Design, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars successfully launched Spectre, a bold evolution of Cullinan and a new expression of Phantom. In line with the marque’s commitment to Bespoke, including Coachbuild, being a vital strategic cornerstone for future success, Anders also oversaw the four magnificent and unique coachbuilt Droptail models and a number of exquisite Private Collection cars. On 1 October, Anders will take on a new role within the BMW Group, where he will be responsible for advanced design topics, as well as BMW Group Designworks.

Domagoj Dukec (49) will join Rolls-Royce Motor Cars as Director of Design, assuming overall responsibility for all design topics, including Bespoke design, an area which is in more demand than ever from the marque’s highly discerning clients through the expanding network of Private Office boutiques and the brand’s global showroom presence. Domagoj brings more than 20 years of experience in senior design positions, including the last five years as Head of Design for BMW. Born in Frankfurt with Croatian roots, Domagoj trained at the Pforzheim School of Design in Germany before embarking on an international career which has included several years spent at design studios in Paris, Barcelona and São Paulo.

ROLLS-ROYCE DESIGN: TAKING THE BEST THAT EXISTS AND MAKING IT BETTER

The fundamental design principles of Sir Henry Royce himself have guided Rolls-Royce Motor Cars for over 100 years. Throughout its 120-year history, the company has pushed the boundaries of luxury, creating new realities both within and beyond automotive design.

The marque’s design philosophy is built on enduring principles that free designers to innovate and create the brand’s greatest visions whilst ensuring a Rolls-Royce is always recognisable, even if you can’t see the unique Pantheon grille or Spirit of Ecstasy mascot.

To this day, three lines harmonise to create a form that is always unquestionably Rolls-Royce: the waft line – the classic character side line that emphasises the motor car’s dynamism; the waistline, imparting a sense of purpose; and the silhouette: striking, powerful and iconic. Negotiating the space between retaining the marque’s distinctive presence while ensuring a Rolls-Royce motor car is both timeless and of its time is therefore a challenging yet fascinating brief.

Press Contact: Andrew Ball
Tel: +44-1243-384-064
E-mail: andrew.ball@rolls-roycemotorcars.com

Corporate,People,Press Release,Leadership

From 1 March, Henrik will take up a new senior position within the BMW Group, where he’ll play a leading role shaping the brand’s future high-end luxury cars.

Henrik came to Rolls-Royce’s global headquarters at Goodwood in 2018, having previously been the marque’s Regional Director for the Greater China region. During his tenure, he led the product development, sales and marketing campaigns for business-critical model launches including Cullinan, Ghost, Phantom Series II and, most recently, Spectre. He also played a central role in making Coachbuild a permanent fixture within the Rolls-Royce portfolio.

Committed to consistency in all things, Henrik transformed the marque’s mindset and attitude. In particular, he fundamentally reshaped how Rolls-Royce understands and interacts with its clients and the experiences it offers them. He brought a more focused, individualised, disciplined and data-driven approach to client engagement, for example with the invitation-only Whispers app for Rolls-Royce owners. Under Henrik’s leadership, Rolls-Royce developed a new Visual Identity, currently being rolled out at dealer partners worldwide. The marque also extended its hugely successful Goodwood Private Office concept to Dubai and Shanghai, with two more following this year. Thanks in part to these Private Offices, 2023 was a record year in terms of both number and value for the marque’s unrivalled Bespoke programme.

Henrik’s successor from 1 March will be Julian Jenkins. Julian is a well-known figure within Rolls-Royce, having previously spent six years at Goodwood, first as General Manager, Sales Operations, then as Regional Director for the Europe. A former President of Aston Martin Lagonda in the Americas, and holder of senior roles at Bentley in North America and the Asia-Pacific region, he makes a welcome return to the Home of Rolls-Royce after serving as Sales Director of BMW UK, and most recently Chief Commercial Officer at Italian supercar manufacturer Bizzarrini, where he played a crucial role in driving revenue growth and shaping the commercial success of the company. Julian’s international experience, product expertise and deep knowledge of the luxury sector ensure he is perfectly placed to take Rolls-Royce forward towards its all-electric future.

Press Contact: Andrew Ball
Tel: +44-1243-384-064
E-mail: andrew.ball@rolls-roycemotorcars.com

Leadership,Corporate,People
